Summative Performance Assessments

 

  • E-mail – Volunteer in Bolivia or Costa Rica

  • Essay – Should one culture be sacrificed for the advancement of another?

  • Dialogue – One student talking to other about what they learned in class about indigenous peoples.

  • Cultural Comparison – What do the members of your community do to help guarantee human rights?

 

First Day Hook

 

I show them an image of a flag (not any country or affiliation in particular) and ask them what the image means.  Then I ask them how do we determine who actually owns land?

 

Authentic Resources & Activities

 

Interpretive Audiovisual – Students view the documentary film Crude about a billion dollar lawsuit between Texaco/Chevron and indigenous peoples of Ecuador.

 

Interpretive Print – Students read the short story El Indio Paulino and create questions in relation to what they believe is the most important parts of the story.

 

Interpretive Audio – Students fill out a KWL chart in relation to audio about “curanderismo”.

 

Interpersonal Spoken – Students Role Play one having visited Machu Picchu and the other having visited Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The compare and contrast their these two places and their trips.

 

Interpersonal Written – Students draft a letter back to their Spanish teacher telling about their visit to Ecuador.  Students explain what they have learned from the indigenous peoples about how their lifestyles and how the area they visited is a good example of ecotourism.

 

Presentational Spoken – Students investigate and give presentations on how indigenous peoples have not been supported in South America and here in the USA.

 

Presentational Written – Students investigate a little further the situation from the film Crude in order to write their opinions on what really happened.  The case is still pending and both sides have been accused of wrong doing.
