  • E-mail – Investigation about maintaining family traditions

  • Essay – Do families function better or worse now that both parents work?

  • Cultural Comparison – How does family impact our identity?

 

First Day Hook

 

Disney Pixar short film La Luna.  This is a short film without dialogue or subtitles.  After viewing, students discuss what are the messages and/or purpose of the film as well as provide examples.

 

Authentic Resources & Activities

 

Interpretive Audiovisual – Students watch a video about the Castellers in Catalonia, Spain.  Students then investigate and make comparisons of all types of family activities both traditional and eccentric. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1HWyUIZ5kk

 

Interpretive Print – Students read and annotate passages about traditional families in the Spanish-speaking world, and how they are changing.

 

Interpretive Audio – Students listen to audios that simulate phone conversations about several family topics such as changing family traditions, teenagers contributing to family income. https://phone.dliflc.edu/default_spanish.asp

 

Interpersonal Spoken – Students have conversations with the Heritage Students from the Spanish for Spanish Speakers classes to talk about how they celebrate holidays and family events similarly and differently.

 

Interpersonal Written – Students write to one another taking on the roles of teenagers working and helping to support their families.

 

Presentational Spoken – Students present to their classroom “familias” about their own family history and traditions.

 

Presentational Written – Students write their personal opinions about child labor and the necessity to survive while using any resources they have read, listened to or watched during the unit.
