First Day Hook

I present the students with a statement that is a title of one of the units from an AP College Board Course Planning & Pacing Guide.  The title is “La mejor universidad es viajar”.  I let students discuss this statement and whether they agree with it or not.  This leads us to the discussion of getting out and seeing the world.

Authentic Resources & Activities

Interpretive Audiovisual – Students watch a video about El Botín which is located in Madrid and is the oldest restaurant in the world.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpmJubYs5Ms&t=82s

Interpretive Print – Students read an article and a chart about health and longevity in Spain and the rest of the world. I will post 6 copies of the article and graph on various places on the wall.  Students take turns walking to their assigned copy and reading parts of the article.  After finding something important they then report back to their “familias”.  The others listen and write down the information provided from the student who went to read the article.  Then a different student from the “familia” goes and reads, and then another until they feel they have all the important information.

I

nterpretive Audio – Students listen to an audio about the festival Las Fallas in Valencia, Spain.  After listening to the audio the students answer all the interrogative words – Quién, Cuándo, Dónde, Cómo, Qué, Cuánto(s), Por qué.

Interpersonal Spoken – Students speak with one another about their travel experiences or where they hope to travel in the future.

Interpersonal Written – Students are given 5-10 sentences that are more basic in nature.  Students have to replace vocabulary and add more advanced grammar, adjectives, adverbs in order to sophisticate the sentences.

Presentational Spoken – At this point in the year most of my students know what college they are attending.  I have them research and plan which study abroad program they think they will realistically do.  They present and share this information with their “familias”.

Presentational Written – Students read about the history of the Running of the Bulls.  Then in pairs students have to summarize the text into exactly 25 words.  No more, no less.
